Two Weeks on the Danube and Cricket in Istanbul

April 22, 2010

A couple of videos for you to look at. The first features some of the footage shot by James Gilmour while we cycled through Germany, Austria and Hungary back in November. His brother is a film-maker and has done a great job editing the material. In case you were wondering, that’s me upside down in the red hoodie, while James is filming.

Now for the second, and it’s a lovely little video, edited my Serpil Ulker, of our time looking for a place to play cricket in Istanbul, and eventually finding a spot and having a hit. It was a surprisingly difficult mission, and thanks to a great team effort (special mention for Serpil,  camerawoman and scout, and Sam Collins, Wisden Cricketer journalist and medium pace bowler) we managed to get government permission for a game outside the Hagia Sophia. In case you missed it, Sam wrote a great article after his visit to Istanbul that appeared in January’s edition of the Wisden Cricketer. Click here to read the piece.

As for me in India, I’ve pedalled 450kms in 6 days to reach a spicy little town called Lanja. I left my bike there this morning and headed to Goa for 2 days rest. I underestimated the heat in India at this time of year. The past 6 days have been the toughest of the trip so far. Still, 2 days lying on a beach will see me ready to tackle the Western Ghats, the mountainous spine that runs down the west coast of India. Next major city stop – Hyderabad in a couple of weeks. If you know anyone there I’d love a contact…I’m keen to visit a school and get some cricket in.

Interesting that the footage of “O Broom bowled Collins 0 (1)” didn’t make the final cut….

if ‘d been editing it would have made the cut Sam. hell of a delivery that, nipping sideways off a jagged paving slab and hitting slap bang in the middle of the dustbin. The little master himself wouldn’t have got near it.

Nice to see you’re still in good form Oli, I’ve been a bit out-of-touch lately so nice to see you’ve got so far!

Have a nice rest and best wishes for the rest of the journey…

Fantastic adventure! Always interesting to follow the updates.

I was cycling in India last winter and also passed by Lanja.

    Enjoy Goa and safe trip!

(Btw, Gokarna 100 km south of Goa is very recommendable).
