A Quick Blog From Auguthella – 750kms to go!

November 14, 2010

Laci and I have fallen behind our vague schedule in the past few days. A combination of some stunning Queensland hospitality in towns like Longreach, Barcaldine and Tambo, unseasonal rains and illness have meant we now have a serious challenge on our hands if we want to reach The Gabba by the 24th November. There is no time to rest up. It’s a race to Brisbane. There’s no time for a proper blog either, so just a couple of interesting photos from the last few days.

Big thanks go to to Naomi and Carly for bursting our ear drums with their cheers on the way past yesterday, and for stopping to say hi and introduce themselves today – and helping us with filming some cycling. Good girls. I wish more good-looking, cheerful female drivers stopped for a chat.

Whenever I tell people I’m cycling through Australia they always say ” be careful of snakes”, or “be careful of spiders”, or to be careful of something else. It’s true, Australia is like Jurassic Park, but happily this is the first snake I’ve seen here. It was dead when I found it, likely run over by a 53 metre road train.

I’m nearly in Brisbane, so I’d be disappointed if I didn’t have some decent tan lines by now….

You’ve only got 750 kms to go and yet you’ll still be there before us! You are counting the Kms and we are counting the days – massively looking forward to cheering you in to the Gabba on 24th. Well done and keep those two tone legs going!

oh no, it’s those infamous boxer shorts from October 2009 again! Ashes fever rising in Bangladesh – I nearly creamed Justin Lee (Aussie HC) with a wild drive on the 17th yesterday. Will look out for you on the telly from here. cheers, Chris

Well, so you meet the nice, the crazy and a dead snake. In Oz. Get there on time boy, and stop worrying about getting there on time.

    Happy cycles!

Great pose my Man! Hope you’ve got a chance to get a new shirt before reaching the target, they won’t let you in with that! Or are you planning to sell your kit for charity? I can hear the auctioneer now “and the next lot is a shirt worn by the intrepid cyclist Oli Broom for the whole of his 25,000km journey between London and Brisbane. Anyone want to bid on this…” :-))

Best wishes from the other hemisphere and have a safe 750km…

Come on Oli you can do it mate. Fantastic effort thus far. Sorry I’ve been a bit quiet on the Twitter lately but it now seems you need some chivvying 😉 750kms, 10 or so days? Should do that easy now as long as you’ve recovered from your illness.

Just stay focussed and spin! The days are lengthening so there’s plenty of daylight time.

Hope to hear you’ve made it in time to celebrate before the test. Will let my fellow snappers know you’re coming as you approach if you drop me a line.

Amazing that you are so close now…… hope it all goes well and enjoying the footage and the blogs. Still very jealous that you are getting to see the cricket, but hey, I think you’ve earned it!

    Keep safe

    Amazing photos as always Broomy.
750km in 10 days…surely too easy for a seasoned cyclist? Although.. a quick review of the cannons would suggest power levels are very low.
Good luck, hope the wind is with you now.

hey Oli! You guys kept us smiling the whole 14 hour drive, that we smashed after seeing you! Well 14 hours with camera and wee stops! he he! We were pleased not to see too many road trains which may have made you hold onto your handle bars!! and glad that the rain didnt last, for us at least, doing 110kms! hope you have a great ride and am sure your hard earned beer will be liquid gold when you have reached your destination! xo happy safe travels 🙂

I note the oak like shade on the legs, although I had expected the twiglet structure to resemble more of a tree-trunk following so many miles on the road. Hope that a sprint finish will put some muscle on the bone.
